I have mounted an exhibit at the San Juan Community Theatre in Friday Harbor, Washington entitled “Capturing Solitude” to be shown during the month of July 2025  The idea for the exhibit was inspired by my recent trip to Hokkaido in February 2025.  Hokkaido is beloved by photographers for sparse winter landscapes and embodies a serene sense of solitude.  Recently I sorted through several years of images looking for a similar sense of solitude.  From that I was able mount the exhibit.  Here is the statement I used to introduce the show:

As a photographer I am acutely aware of being alone, but never lonely.  Watching light play over a scene or seeing a composition unfold while slowly walking is almost always a solitary exercise.  In looking through images collected over several years I was struck by how many of them suggested the serenity and beauty of being alone.

It also struck me that what I needed, now, today, was a sense of calm.  I hope that this collection of images provides that same sense of serenity and beauty and one goes away feeling a little bit better about the world
